Former Afghan President Sibghatullah Mojaddedi dies

A prominent politician, Jihadi leader and former President of Afghanistan Sibghatullah Mojaddedi has died, sources close to his family confirmed.

Born in 1926 in Kabul, Mojaddedi was appointed as the Acting President and head of the interim government after the victory of Mujahideen against Soviet forces.

Mojaddedi left for Pakistan in 1978 following the 1978 coup which resulted in the victory of People’s Democratic Party and started a political and armed campaign against the government of the time by forming National Liberation Front.

He was appointed as the Chairman of the Afghan Senate, Upper House of Parliament (Meshrano Jirga) in 2003.
