Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has revealed that he is “jealous” of the goals of Portuguese champion Cristiano Ronaldo, the top scorer in the Champions League.

“As a coach, he is the best player I have had,” Zidane said.

“I wasn’t able to play with him, unfortunately – but I did play against him. His statistics are amazing.”

“I played with the Brazilian Ronaldo, who was also an extraordinary player who scored a lot of goals. I’m jealous of them because I didn’t have those numbers,” he revealed.

“I got a lot of assists but I just passed the ball and didn’t have their goal-scoring ability, so I never had the same feeling – that thrill of the ball hitting the net – as them. They are decisive players.”

Zidane’s comments come on the eve of Real’s hosting of Atletico in the semi-final of the Champions League, which the club won last year at the expense of the Spanish club itself.

On Monday, Zidane said that Real Madrid do not have a psychological advantage over Champions League semi-final opponents Atletico Madrid despite beating them in two finals in three years.

As well as victories in Lisbon (2014) and Milan (2016), Real knocked Atletico out of the competition in the 2015 quarter-finals. Atletico have never lifted European club football’s most prestigious trophy while Real have won it a record 11 times.

Zidane, however, thinks the past will be irrelevant when the teams meet on Tuesday in the first leg at the Bernabeu.
